What Is An Egress Window?

Egress windows, also known as fire code windows, are windows that can be used as exits. An egress window is typically used as an exit in the case of a fire, when other exits are not available or when fire limits your access to exterior doors.

Where Egress Windows Are Required

Egress windows are required in every bedroom unless there’s a door that opens directly to the outside. Egress windows are also recommended in basements—again unless there’s an exterior door. Bedrooms in basements must have egress windows

Requirements For Installation

Requirements For Installation

  • They must be easy to open from the inside without any tools or special knowledge.
  • They must open to create an unobstructed area of at least 0.35 m² (3.77 ft²).
  • The minimum length of any side of the window is 380 mm (15”).
  • The egress window cannot be more than 1.5 m above the floor.
  • If the window opens into a window well, the window well must not interfere with opening the window or cause any obstructions.

Features

  • Compliance with National Building Code: Whether they’re being used as bedroom windows, basement windows, or basement bedroom windows, our egress windows all comply with the rules set out by the National Building Code of Canada, and can be used as egress windows in Winnipeg and throughout Manitoba.
  • Energy-efficient: All of our egress windows are engineered to withstand Winnipeg’s harsh climate. Using argon gas, low-E coatings, and other features, our windows can lower your energy bills by reducing your heating and cooling needs.
  • Expert installation: When basement windows are converted into bedroom basement windows, concrete cutting might be required in order to enlarge the existing window opening. When this happens, window replacement companies like Nisby will typically recommend hiring a company to enlarge the window opening to fit the new egress window. This work usually requires a permit from your municipality; our team will help you find the right concrete-cutting company, guide you through the permitting process, and then expertly install your windows.
  • Easy to open: We offer egress windows in a number of different styles, including slider, hung, casement, and awning windows. Our casement and awning egress windows are outfitted with a special hinge that allows them to open 90° for an unobstructed exit—and all of our egress windows are extremely easy to open.
  • Customizable: Our egress windows are available in a number of different styles to suit your home, your aesthetics, and your lifestyle. We also offer different colours, finishes, and sizes of egress windows—all compliant with the relevant building codes.
